This book examines seven French Language films, realized between 1952-1991 by well-known directors, which have enjoyed considerable popular and critical success. In these films--Jeux interdits (Clement). Les Quatre cents coups (Truffaut), Rue Cases-Negres (Palcy), Le Grand-Chemin (Hubert), Au revoir les enfants (Malle), La gloire de mon pere and le Chateau de ma mere (Robert)--one finds a unifying common denominator: childhood. During these years French society was in a sense rediscovering itself through the retrospective narrative in literary works and their filmic adaptations. This study highlights the importance of the affective quality that permeates this genre of storytelling through the analysis of temporal schemes, subjectivity of narration and focalisation, child-heroes defined by their encourages, rites of passage, the meeting of child and myth, childhood as the source of literary and cinematographic variations, and the critical view of society and the human condition presented by each author and filmmaker. This study is richly illustrated with stills from the various films.
